Yego Seeks Record Sixth African Gold in What May Be His Final Championship

Julius Yego has won five African Championships javelin titles. He’s going to Accra to win a sixth. And he’s saying out loud that this might be the last time he gets to try.

“This might perhaps be my last African Championships,” Yego said ahead of the May 12-17 showpiece at the University of Ghana Stadium. “So I want to go there, enjoy the competition, and come back with the gold.”

He tested himself at the Kip Keino Classic on April 24 — finished fourth with a best of 79.87m. Not the result he wanted. But he’s not reading too much into it. The championship is what counts.

Yego became the first African to win the javelin World Championship gold back in 2015 in Beijing. He taught himself technique by watching YouTube — the story became legendary. Now he’s 37, heading into what could be his continental curtain call.

Six titles would be his alone. Nobody else has done it. That’s the target.
