Victor Wanyama Retires After 20 Years, Kenya’s Greatest Bows Out

Victor Wanyama is done. The Lion of Muthurwa announced his retirement from professional football on April 3, ending nearly two decades that took him from Nairobi’s Landi Mawe estate to the Premier League, the Champions League, and 64 caps for Harambee Stars.

He was 15 when he made his senior debut for Kenya. By the time he was done, he had played for Celtic, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, and CF Montreal — and scored against Barcelona.

That night at Celtic Park in 2012 stands alone. Celtic beat Barcelona 2-1 in the Champions League group stage. Wanyama scored. It remains one of the most iconic moments in Scottish football history.

He was the first Kenyan to play in the English Premier League. At Spurs, he made 97 appearances and helped the club finish second in 2016/17. He later scored the opening goal in Tottenham’s farewell match at the old White Hart Lane.

“His father Noah Wanyama played for AFC Leopards,” the reports note. The son went further than anyone imagined.

He led Harambee Stars at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and captained his country with distinction. Now he looks ahead — with plans to complete his UEFA A License in 2026 and move into coaching.

Kenya’s greatest footballer has left the stage.
