Sports Kenya Responds to Criticism Over Kasarani Pitch Condition

Sports Kenya has addressed concerns over the deteriorating state of the Kasarani Stadium pitch ahead of Nairobi United’s CAF Confederation Cup clash with Wydad Athletic on Sunday in Nairobi. The government agency moved to explain the situation after fans and officials criticized the surface, which appeared dry and discolored.

The pitch, once praised during the 2024 African Nations Championship matches last August, has recently turned brown after going long periods without watering. Sports Kenya admitted the condition had dropped but insisted corrective measures are underway.

“We acknowledge the concerns raised and have already begun maintenance works to restore the pitch to acceptable standards,” a Sports Kenya official said. Another source added, “The heavy schedule and weather conditions affected the grass, but this is being addressed.”

Observers noted the sharp contrast with last year’s tournament, where Kasarani hosted multiple matches on a well-maintained surface. “It’s disappointing to see the pitch like this before such an important game,” a local football analyst told Kenyan media.
