Sh950m Bomet Stadium Breaks Ground as Sh300m Abandoned Project Fades Away

Kenya is building another stadium. And leaving a half-finished one behind in the process.

Groundbreaking began this week on the new Kipchamba Stadium in Kipranye village, Bomet County — a Sh950 million facility expected to be completed in nine months. China Road and Bridge Corporation handles construction, KDF supervises, and the project covers a 10,000-seat ground with an eight-lane athletics track, VIP facilities, football pitch, and courts for netball and basketball. APS Bomet FC, currently playing home games in Kericho and Kisii, will finally have a stadium to call their own.

The reason this new build exists is a story in itself. The previous Bomet IAAF project — 30,000 seats, over Sh300 million already sunk into it — was effectively abandoned after a land dispute between Bomet County and Bomet University. President Ruto resolved it in February 2024 by handing that land to the university. A new site was found. Construction starts again from scratch.

Nine months to go. Bomet has heard promises before.
