Obiri targets London Marathon history amid elite field

Kenyan distance star Hellen Obiri will chase a historic third straight London Marathon title in April 2026, opting to defend her crown despite facing what organisers have billed as the strongest women’s field ever assembled. The Olympic bronze medallist confirmed her decision this week, saying London remains her top priority due to its prestige and competition level.
Obiri, who won the race in 2024 and 2025, could become the first woman in the modern era to claim three consecutive London titles. “London is special to me. I want to challenge myself against the best,” Obiri said, adding that history is “a big motivation.”
However, the task will be tougher than ever, with multiple world and major marathon champions confirmed on the start list. Her coach noted that “the field is deeper, but Hellen thrives under pressure,” while a rival athlete admitted, “Beating Obiri in London is never easy.”
The 36-year-old has gradually shifted from track to road dominance, and her London decision underlines her ambition to cement a legacy among marathon greats.
