Nairobi to Host Wavelight Technology’s African Debut on April 24

Kenya is set to make African sports history on April 24 when the Kip Keino Classic at Nyayo Stadium becomes the first event on the continent to use wavelight technology. The LED pacing system — fixed on track rails, using colour-coded lights placed 100 metres apart — guides athletes toward target times and world records.

First used competitively at the 2018 FBK Games in the Netherlands, the system has since produced remarkable results. Beatrice Chebet used it to clock a 10,000m world record of 28:54.14 at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic. Faith Kipyegon broke both the mile and 5,000m world records with it in 2023.

“It gives also good times. If we want to attain certain times in a certain event, we can use that wave light so that athletes can follow easily,” meet director Barnaba Korir told Capital FM. Discussions with the technology team are finalised. Record attempts are expected on April 24 in Nairobi.
