Mvurya backs Kenya to beat AFCON 2027 payment pressure

Kenya’s Sports CS Salim Mvurya stated in March 2026 that the country would be able to pay the $30 million for the right to host AFCON 2027, despite a lack of funds in the budget, by the CAF deadline in April.

Speaking in Nairobi, the official acknowledged that the Ksh3.9 billion had not been secured in advance, but emphasized the urgency of the decision. “We are working closely with the Treasury to secure the funds in time,” Mvurya noted. He also assured that Kenya’s participation in the joint bid with Uganda and Tanzania remains unchanged.

Preparations for the tournament continue: stadium upgrades and organizational processes are proceeding according to plan. “Our focus is to meet CAF requirements and deliver,” he added.

Nevertheless, tensions are rising: the bid partners have already fulfilled their obligations, and Kenya is essentially playing against the clock to avoid jeopardizing its place in the tournament.
