Mercy Oketch Faces World-Class Field on Diamond League Debut

Mercy Oketch steps into the Diamond League for the first time in Shanghai on Saturday — and the draw has not been kind.

The 23-year-old Kenyan 400m champion lines up against a stacked field at the season opener in Keqiao. Salwa Eid Naser is in the race. The 2019 world champion holds a personal best of 48.14. Also in the field: Nickisha Pryce (48.57), two-time world bronze medalist Sada Williams, and 2025 world finalist Roxana Gómez.

Oketch arrives in form. She ran a world-leading 300m of 35.77 at the Simbine Classic, breaking the Kenyan national record. She won the Kip Keino Classic 400m in 50.17. She helped Kenya set a new national record of 3:09.87 in the 4x400m mixed relay at the World Athletics Relays on May 3.

Debut or not, she belongs here. But Naser is a different level. This is the education part.
