McCarthy explains Bajaber call despite lack of fitness

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has defended his decision to include Mohammed Bajaber in Kenya’s squad despite the midfielder lacking full match fitness ahead of recent international fixtures.

Speaking after naming the squad, McCarthy said Bajaber’s quality and potential impact outweighed concerns about his sharpness. “He may not be fully fit, but he brings something special to the team,” the South African coach explained. “Sometimes you pick players for what they can offer in key moments.”

The call raised questions among fans, given Bajaber’s limited game time at club level in recent weeks. However, McCarthy insisted the player understands the demands, adding, “We will manage him carefully, but his talent is undeniable.”

Bajaber’s inclusion highlights McCarthy’s intent to blend form with trust as Kenya continues building towards upcoming continental assignments.
