Kipyegon to Lead Women’s Mile Back to Prefontaine Classic After 30 Years

Thirty years. That’s how long the women’s mile has been absent from the Prefontaine Classic. July 3-4, 2026, at Hayward Field in Eugene — it comes back. And Faith Kipyegon will be the one leading it out.
The meet record in the women’s mile has been sitting untouched since Mary Slaney set 4:21.25 in 1988. Kipyegon’s world record is 4:07.64. The math is not close.
This will be her 11th appearance at the Pre Classic. She has broken records there before and she has broken records everywhere. In 2023, she became the first woman to break three world records in a single calendar year — a feat that redefined what was thought possible in women’s distance running. Her 1500m gold medals in 2016, 2021, and 2024 made her the most decorated women’s middle-distance runner of the Olympic era.
In June 2025, at a Nike event, she clocked 4:06.42 — unofficially, while chasing the sub-four-minute barrier. The mark didn’t count. The ambition was noted.
Now she gets a proper stage. A historic event back on the calendar after three decades. A record that was set before most of the current field was born.
Kipyegon doesn’t do exhibitions. She races to win and she races to break things. Eugene should be ready.
