Kenyan MPs reject AFCON 2027 budget boost

Kenya’s Parliament has voted down a proposal to increase funding for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations preparations, dealing a setback to organizers in Nairobi this week. Lawmakers opposed the additional allocation, pointing to budget pressures and oversight concerns.

Supporters argued the extra cash was vital to upgrade stadiums to meet CAF standards. “We must be ready to host at the highest level,” a government official said.

Critics countered that “public funds must be used prudently,” urging tighter control of spending.

Kenya will co-host AFCON 2027 with regional partners, but must now deliver key upgrades within its existing budget.
