Kenya to Shut Major Stadiums for AFCON 2027 Upgrades

Kenya has announced the closure of several major stadiums as it accelerates renovations ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, citing pressure to meet CAF standards comparable to Morocco’s facilities. The works will begin this year in Nairobi and other host cities as the country prepares to co-host the tournament with Uganda and Tanzania.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said the upgrades are non-negotiable. “CAF standards are very clear, and we must deliver world-class venues,” he noted, adding that delays are no longer an option.

Key facilities, including Moi International Sports Centre, will undergo improvements in seating, lighting and media infrastructure. Local football officials admit the timeline is tight. “We are racing against time, but the commitment is there,” one administrator said.

Kenya is also banking on new projects such as Talanta Sports City to strengthen its AFCON 2027 hosting credentials.
