Kenya plans railway link to ease AFCON 2027 stadium travel

Kenya has unveiled a railway transport plan aimed at easing congestion during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, proposing a direct rail link between Talanta Sports City Stadium and Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi. The announcement was made in January as preparations intensify for the tournament scheduled for mid-2027.

The project is designed to address growing concerns over traffic congestion on matchdays, with thousands of fans expected to move between venues. Talanta Stadium, a new 60,000-seat arena under construction, is set to be the centrepiece of Kenya’s AFCON hosting duties, while Nyayo Stadium will serve as a secondary venue.

Government officials say the rail connection will offer a faster and safer alternative to road transport. “Efficient movement of fans is critical to hosting a successful AFCON,” said Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, adding that the plan would leave a lasting transport legacy. Transport analysts have also welcomed the move, noting it could significantly reduce pressure on Nairobi’s road network during the tournament.
