Kenya hit by $1.1bn shortfall, AFCON 2027 at risk

Kenya’s AFCON 2027 plans have hit a major snag in 2026, with a $1.1 billion funding gap stalling stadium upgrades and putting tournament readiness under pressure. Delays in financing and construction have slowed progress across key venues meant to meet CAF standards.

“We are facing serious financial constraints,” a government official admitted.

Organizers remain cautious but determined: “There’s still time, but we must act fast,” a sports authority said.

The upgrades were central to Kenya’s co-hosting bid, but with deadlines looming, the country now races to secure funds and keep its AFCON ambitions on track.
