Kenya Edge Closer to FIFA-Verified VAR in AFCON 2027 Build-Up

Kenya are pushing ahead with plans to install FIFA-verified VAR technology in their stadiums before the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations — and those plans now have French money behind them. Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi confirmed on May 12 that talks with a French investment delegation had moved forward at the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, with both sides eyeing a full rollout ahead of the tournament Kenya will co-host with Tanzania and Uganda.
The French side was led by Sophie Lorant, President of France Sports Expertise, and brought a team of technical consultants ready to commit to the project. The scope of what was discussed goes well beyond VAR — pitch upgrades, stadium redesigns, and sports facilities spread across all 47 counties were all on the table.
“Our discussions revolved around encouraging investments in sports through the introduction of FIFA-verified VAR technology,” Mwangi told reporters. “As a government, our resolve is to engage with stakeholders to drive Kenya’s sport to the next level.”
Getting VAR in before 2027 isn’t just about prestige. CAF has made modern officiating infrastructure a requirement for host nations, and Kenya can’t afford to fall short on that front with the tournament less than 18 months away.
