Japan Fans and Winston Clean Stadium After Netherlands Draw
Japanese supporters cleaned up litter inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on June 14, 2026, following their team’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in a FIFA World Cup Group F match – a post-match ritual that drew attention when NFL quarterback and Fox Sports correspondent Jameis Winston joined them. Videos circulating on social media showed fans carrying trash bags printed with the words “Japan Pride” as Winston was seen collecting rubbish alongside them in the stands.
On the pitch, Japan came from behind twice to earn a point. Virgil van Dijk and Crysencio Summerville both scored for the Netherlands in the second half, with Japan’s Keio Nakamura pulling one back before Daichi Kamada equalised in the 88th minute from a set piece. All three second-half goals arrived within a 14-minute span. Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman acknowledged his side had squandered a lead twice, while Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu credited his players’ patience and composure. Van Dijk described conceding so late from a dead-ball situation as “extra disappointing.”
The two nations had met only once before at a World Cup, when the Netherlands defeated Japan at the 2010 tournament in South Africa. Japan have reached the knockout rounds at the past two World Cups but have never advanced beyond the round of 16. The Netherlands, one of the few countries to reach a World Cup final three times without lifting the trophy, were eliminated at the quarterfinal stage in 2022 by Argentina on penalties.
Both sides remain in contention in Group F, with the draw leaving the standings tight heading into the remaining group-stage fixtures. A place in the round of 16 is still within reach for each team, though neither can afford further dropped points if results elsewhere go against them.
