Harambee Stars Get Lift as McCarthy Targets Key AFCON Moves

Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has been handed a boost as he looks to use upcoming transfers to strengthen Kenya’s squad ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which the country will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.

McCarthy is focusing on Kenyan players abroad and emerging local talent, aiming to build a competitive core early in the AFCON cycle. “We must raise the level by bringing in players who are playing regularly at a high standard,” McCarthy said. “This is about preparing properly for 2027, not shortcuts.”

Young prospects such as Spain-based defender Amos Wanjala and locally based youngsters Manzur Okwaro and Baron Ochieng are viewed as possible additions as the coach reshapes the team. “I want players who are hungry and tactically smart,” McCarthy added, stressing discipline and growth.

With Kenya preparing for its first AFCON as hosts, smart transfer moves could play a crucial role in lifting Harambee Stars’ continental ambitions.
