Eriksen Collapses Again During Friendly, Regains Consciousness Quickly
Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine on 7 June 2026 at Odense Stadium, prompting medical staff to rush onto the field and the match to be abandoned. The Danish Football Union confirmed in a statement that Eriksen was conscious and feeling well under the circumstances.
Denmark’s team doctor Morten Boesen confirmed that Eriksen’s implantable cardioverter-defibrillator – the heart-starting device fitted after his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 in June 2021 – was responding as it should. Boesen’s statement indicated Eriksen had been briefly unconscious but regained consciousness quickly, with medical staff establishing contact with him promptly. Boesen relayed that Eriksen asked him to pass his regards to teammates and assure them he was okay. The match had reached the 61st minute, with Denmark leading Ukraine 2-1, when Eriksen collapsed near midfield.
Eriksen’s 2021 cardiac arrest, which occurred during Denmark’s group-stage match against Finland at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, required CPR and ten minutes of on-field medical care before he was stretchered off. He was stabilised in hospital and subsequently had the defibrillator implanted. He returned to professional football and currently plays for VfL Wolfsburg in Germany’s second division, the 2. Bundesliga, having previously represented Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in the English Premier League.
Boesen stated that Eriksen would undergo further examinations at hospital to determine the cause of the incident, with the Danish Football Union and hospital doctors remaining in ongoing contact with the player.
