Doets sweeps Munyua 3-0 to end dream run

Kenya’s David Munyua saw his breakthrough World Darts Championship campaign halted on Monday, losing 3-0 in sets to Dutchman Kevin Doets in Round 2 at Alexandra Palace in London. Doets, ranked 40th on the PDC Order of Merit, tightened the screws with a 90 average, five 180s and a best checkout of 121 to snuff out the “Why not?” fairytale.

“I apologize; I was cocky… I’m a top 40 player and he is not,” Doets said after the win. Munyua, who had stunned 18th seed Mike De Decker in round one, insisted the run still changed lives back home, saying it was “life-changing” and that Kenya must treat darts “as a serious sport worthy of investment and support.”

Munyua leaves with Sh4.2 million in prize money and a historic first Kenyan win on the sport’s biggest stage, while Doets moves on to face either Nathan Aspinall or Leonard Gates.
