Charlton Coach Vows Ruthless Summer Overhaul After Near-Relegation Scare

Nathan Jones is done being patient.
Charlton Athletic survived the Championship season by finishing 19th — two places above the drop, clinging on. Their final game was a 3-1 loss to Swansea. The writing was already on the wall by then.
Kenyan defender Collins Sichenje made six appearances after joining mid-season from Vojvodina, though injuries kept him out of eight matches. Whether he’s part of Jones’ plans next season is unclear. The coach was blunt about what needs to change.
“We have to get better individuals that make really good decisions,” Jones said. “We have to improve on every single level.”
He wants faster players. More athletic. A squad capable of playing expansively rather than grinding out the cautious football that got them through. Staying up was the job. Now the job changes.
“By the first game next season, fans should see clear improvement,” he said. Or they’ll be having this same conversation again in May.
