Broos backs four-year AFCON cycle to boost Africa

South Africa coach Hugo Broos has backed CAF’s move to a four-year AFCON cycle, saying it should give national teams more time to build stable squads and avoid constant stop-start planning. CAF confirmed the shift will kick in after the 2028 tournament, with AFCON then staged every four years.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe said the new model will be supported by an annual African Nations League from 2029, stressing: “Historically the Nations Cup was the prime resource for us but now we will get financial resources every year.” He added the change brings “more synchronisation with the FIFA calendar” and argued: “I can’t have players leaving their clubs in Europe in the mid-season.
