Broncos Defense and Waddle Acquisition Shape 10-Win Case
The Denver Broncos enter the 2025 NFL season with a win-total line set at 9.5, a figure that current analysis suggests undervalues a team built around one of the league’s better defensive units. After an 11-game winning streak in the 2024 regular season carried them to the playoffs, the Broncos face heightened expectations and a more demanding schedule.
Denver’s 2024 campaign saw the Broncos emerge as the dominant team in the AFC West, a division the Kansas City Chiefs had long controlled. They defeated the Buffalo Bills 33-30 in the postseason before losing 10-7 to the New England Patriots in a low-scoring game played largely without starting quarterback Bo Nix, who had been injured against Buffalo. Backup Jarrett Stidham started in his place. The postseason exit, combined with the circumstances surrounding Nix’s health, adds a layer of uncertainty heading into 2025.
The most significant offseason roster move was the acquisition of wide receiver Jaylen Waddle from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for first-, third-, and fourth-round draft picks, with one pick returning to Denver. The cost was steep for a receiver viewed as a complementary rather than transformational addition. On the other side of the ball, the Broncos retained most of their defensive personnel, losing defensive tackle John Franklin-Myers but otherwise keeping an elite unit largely intact.
With head coach Sean Payton still in place and the defense expected to remain among the NFL’s strongest, the primary variable is whether Nix can sustain his 2024 level of play. A tougher 2025 schedule complicates the projection, but 10 regular-season wins is the threshold the over-9.5 bet requires, and the roster composition gives Denver a credible path to that mark.
