Brigid Kosgei reveals Turkey nationality switch approach

Former world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei has revealed that Turkey once made a lucrative offer for her to switch nationalities at the peak of her career, but she turned it down to remain loyal to Kenya. Kosgei said the approach came shortly after her historic exploits on the global stage, when interest in her services was at its highest.

“They approached me with a very big offer, but my heart was with Kenya,” Kosgei told Pulse Sports, adding that the proposal was discussed with her management before being rejected. The 2019 Chicago Marathon champion stressed that representing her country mattered more than financial rewards. “I’ve always wanted to run for Kenya, no matter the situation,” she said.

Athletics experts note that such offers are common for elite runners with major titles and fast times, including Kosgei’s 2:14:04 marathon record set in Chicago. “Top athletes often face these choices, but not many turn them down,” an athletics coach observed.

Kosgei remains one of Kenya’s most decorated marathoners and a symbol of national pride.
