Brigid Kosgei linked to shock Turkey switch

Former marathon world record holder Brigid Kosgei is among 11 Kenyan athletes reportedly linked with a potential switch of allegiance to Turkey ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The reports have sparked concern in Kenyan athletics, with sources claiming the athletes are exploring better financial support and long-term security. “These moves are driven by economic realities,” an athletics official was quoted as saying.

Kosgei, a multiple major marathon winner, has not commented publicly, but Athletics Kenya said it was aware of the situation. “We are engaging the athletes and monitoring developments closely,” a federation representative said.

A former Kenyan coach warned of wider implications, stating, “Losing elite runners would be a big blow to the country’s legacy.”

The possible switch highlights growing competition among nations to attract top endurance talent ahead of LA 2028.
