Benni McCarthy opens up on 2010 World Cup controversy

Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has spoken publicly about the long-running controversy surrounding his omission from South Africa’s squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, addressing claims that off-field issues played a role in the decision.
The former striker said the situation still surprises him, insisting he was ready to represent his country at the home tournament. “I felt I deserved to be there,” McCarthy said. “Playing a World Cup in your own country is every player’s dream.”
McCarthy also dismissed rumours linking him to a scandal involving prostitutes during that period. “Many things were said that were not true,” he explained. “People created stories without facts.”
Now leading Kenya’s national team, the ex-Porto star said he has moved on from the episode. “You learn from the past,” he added. “My focus today is helping Kenyan football grow.”
