AFCON opens gates free as organisers chase crowds to fill stands
AFCON organisers have begun allowing fans free entry to selected matches at the Africa Cup of Nations, a move taken this week to boost attendance and create better atmospheres inside largely empty stadiums. The decision applies to group-stage games at tournament venues, according to sources familiar with the plan.
Officials are concerned that low crowds could undermine the spectacle despite competitive matches on the pitch. “The idea is simple: we want full stands and a real AFCON atmosphere,” a source told Standard Media, adding that empty seats were “not good for the image of the tournament.”
A CAF-linked official said organisers are responding quickly. “Supporters bring energy. When the stands are full, the players feel it and the games improve,” he explained.
Coaches have also welcomed the move. “Football is played for fans,” one national team coach said. “Free access will help the tournament feel alive.”
AFCON organisers will continue to monitor attendance, with further measures possible as the group stage progresses.
